No Carbon Credits Required !

November 1st, 2011 – Victoria, B.C.

Many coffee roasting companies across Canada are claiming 'carbon neutral' status these days, however, consumers are encouraged to look closely at their labels to find out 'how' they achieve this. Most coffee companies making the claim of being carbon neutral are achieving this by purchasing 'Carbon Credits', and are being bought by a number of roasting companies whose technology is outdated, and continues to pollute the environment. Many of these companies are simply folding the costs of the carbon credits into their cost of goods. 'If you look closely, many coffee roasters are claiming carbon neutral status, but all they're doing is buying credits to offset their emissions', states Fresh Cup President, Jim Townley. 'The truth is, consumers are likely paying a higher price for products without even knowing it'. No matter how you slice it, buying carbon credits is a cost to a company, and many companies are buying them more for their marketing value than the purpose that they were intended for. 'Whether you plant a tree, or buy credits to off-set the carbon emissions produced in making a product, it costs money', notes Townley. That cost has to show up somewhere along the line, and if the cost to buy credits continues to remain low like it is, many companies will continue to pollute and make consumers pay the price. 'What's the point of low cost credits, if the cost can be added to the product for the consumer to pay ? Where's the motivation for companies to change their business practices to minimize the impact on the environment', asks Townley. 'Our approach is simple…be sustainable in how we roast coffee by reusing the heat, and drastically minimize the emissions, then there's no carbon credits required'.

Sustainable Coffee Roaster Leads The Way !

October 3rd, 2011 – Vancouver B.C.

While other coffee roasting equipment sat idle on the trade show floor of the Vancouver Convention Centre, one small upstart company was busy handing out freshly roasted coffee samples. Sustainable coffee roasting leader 'Fresh Cup' demonstrated how clean and consistent retail coffee roasting can actually be. A flood of trade show delegates packed the booth during the two day show to see the 'live' roasting demos and were amazed to see only great coffee emerge from their patented Roastaire™. 'There is so much more we can do to manage emissions and energy consumption when it comes to coffee roasting', noted Fresh Cup President Jim Townley. 'We have certainly brought the topic of how roasting affects the environment to the floor for an open discussion, and current drum and air roaster manufactures are just not comfortable talking about these sensitive issues'. Fresh Cup's technology consumes '20 times less energy' than the same size drum roaster and afterburner combination. In addition to being energy efficient, the Roastaire™ is closed to the environment 85% of the time, which adds a second and more powerful dimension to its design. 'So many roaster manufacturers are trying to deal with the emissions of coffee roasting by using more energy, which only increases the BTU consumption', adds Townley. With rising energy costs a guarantee in the future, many coffee roasters are looking to find ways of managing their roasting emissions in order to meet upcoming EPA regulations. 'Even micro-roasting is being regulated in Seattle', noted Townley. 'EPA standards around coffee roasting is not a matter of if they will happen anymore, it's a matter of when are they going to impact a company's operation'. Fresh Cup's technology addresses the issues of emission and energy consumption, so cafes getting into coffee roasting have a way to differentiate themselves from the larger coffee chains, offering fresher and tastier coffee which means better value to the consumer.

Fresh Cup To Host Roasting Seminars At Canadian Coffee & Tea Show !

September 15th, 2011 – Vancouver B.C.

Sustainable coffee roasting technology leader, Fresh Cup Roastery Café, will present at this year's Canadian Coffee & Tea Show being held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on October 2nd and 3rd. 'We're proud to have been asked to present to the delegates at the show on how onsite roasting can help build your café revenues and reputation', President of Fresh Cup Jim Townley notes. For over 12 years Fresh Cup has roasted their coffee daily to ensure absolute freshness and has advocated customers to support the organic movement as part of a sustainability model for the coffee industry. 'Sustainable is not just about buying the green coffee, sustainability is a bean to cup thing, the whole process', adds Townley. Access to green coffee is getting easier and small micro-roasting companies are starting to pop-up. The challenge is to ensure roasting is sustainable, which is where the Roastaire© comes in. 'Upsetting the community you roast in because of the emissions coming from your business, or putting thousands of unused BTU's into the atmosphere is not the right approach', comments Jim, 'We need to consider the big picture so we can evolve with the times and continue to enjoy our favorite hot beverage, free of guilt'.

Fresh Cup To Roast 'Live' At Local Coffee Show !

August 25th, 2011 – Victoria, B.C.

The upcoming Western Canadian Barista Championships are coming to Victoria this weekend at the Crystal Gardens. A local and passionate group of coffee lovers have put together a show appropriately named 'For The Love Of Coffee'. At the show, a number of local coffee roasters will have a booth so they can connect with the people who attend. One local roaster is taking it to another level all together, Fresh Cup Roastery Café will be showcasing their patented closed-loop roasting technology. 'We want to show people how clean coffee roasting can be', notes Jim Townley, President. 'Most people haven't see coffee being roasted before, so we wanted to show them what the process can look like'. For those that have seen Fresh Cup's patented Roastaire© they will have the chance to see the future of coffee roasting in Canada. 'We manage not only our energy consumption, but the emissions aspect of things as well', states Townley, 'We have a roaster that can exist on the ground floor of a 20 storey building and not interfere with their air quality of the neighborhood'. Fresh Cup has invested 10 years in developing a whole new approach to coffee roasting, one that delivers a clear, sustainable alternative to traditional coffee roasting technology. 'Just like how fuel injection and electric power were advancements of the carburetor, we intend on being the 'Hybrid' of the coffee roasting world.', states Townley.

Fresh Cup 'Brewing Café Culture' In Times Colonist !

August 24th, 2011 – Victoria, B.C.

Brewing café culture is never easy when it comes to changing the way traditions go. Fresh Cup strives to do just this and has worked to pioneer a unique, energy efficient coffee roasting technology that minimizes the impact on the environment. 'Everyone talks about buying green coffee in a sustainable way, but then avoids the topic of 'how' coffee is roasted and the impact traditional drum and air roasters have on the environment', points out Jim Townley, President of Fresh Cup. Coffee uses an enormous amount of heat to transform it to the finished bean we all enjoy and current technologies pass the air through the coffee one time only, which is where Fresh Cup's patented technology comes into play. 'We recycle the heated air, scrub about 80% of the smoke out and reintroduce it to the beans. We are closed to environment 85% of the time which brings down overall energy consumption by about 80%', claims Townley. Many people don't know that afterburners that coffee roasters currently use consume multiples of the energy it actually takes to roast the coffee itself. Add to this, the wasted heat goes up into the atmosphere, which adds to pollution. 'Our goal is to create a more sustainable way to roast coffee, one that makes sense for cafes to start roasting their own coffee onsite, which makes a big difference in the quality of the coffee they serve', notes Mel Townley, Roastmaster for Fresh Cup.

'They seemed to be impressed that we are the first coffee roasting company in the history of the show to roast 'live' on floor with zero emissions', noted President Jim Townley. A First For The Canadian Coffee Industry !

September 26th, 2010 - Toronto, ON

For the first time in Canadian Specialty Coffee history, B.C. based Fresh Cup Roastery cafe roasted coffee 'LIVE' on the show floor at the Canadian Coffee & Tea Show. 'It's ground breaking when you think about how much smoke coffee roasting produces on even small batches', notes Fresh Cup President - Jim Townley, 'We unveiled our patented technology here at the show with the intention of showing the industry how we intend on managing the emissions produced when coffee roasting, so that small cafes can implement onsite roasting with ease'. The Roastaire™ is closed to the environment 85% of the time and is 80% more energy efficient that the equivalent sized drum roaster. 'What this means for cafe owners is, they can now roast in urban areas without fear of polluting their neighbourhood', emphasizes Raymond Lemaire - VP of Roaster Development at Fresh Cup, 'This opens up a number of possibilities for a cafe to bring a higher level of freshness and taste to the consumer, which translates to dollars because you can grow your customer base'. In Seattle, considered the birth place of coffee for many in the coffee industry, roasting is now becoming regulated because of the emissions produce. It's been noted that coffee roasting emits a considerable amount of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere, along with a significant amount of heat. Fresh Cup's new roasting technology addresses these issues in advance of stiffer regulations on the horizon in Canada.

'This is an ambitious goal, but one that can be achieved if the community pitches in', notes Feed The Soul Producer Jim Townley, 'The CD is more upbeat overall than last year's compilation, which in no way takes away from last year's quality, we just felt that the tempo needed to be a little faster'. This year's CD contains great local talent once again, with 2 local students from Peninsula High School's earning a spot on the CD. 'Both Sam Weber and Rebecca Boux are very talented and their energy was refreshing. In all the musicians range in age from 17-57. Fresh Cup Invited to Appear on CBC's Dragon Den !

April 1st, 2010 - Sidney & Saanichton B.C.
PRESS RELEASE:

Fresh Cup To Appear On Season 6 of CBC's 'Dragon's Den'

March 31st, 2010 - Sidney, BC - For many people across Canada the TV show 'Dragon's Den' on CBC is an entertaining experience whereby inventors and entrepreneurs from all across Canada come onto the weekly show looking for investment capital from one or more of the 5 feared Dragon's. The 'Dragon's' (as they are affectionately referred to by viewers), are successful Canadian business people who listen to the various pitches from inventors and entrepreneurs looking to find that 'diamond in the rough' investment opportunity to invest their well earned money into.

Local company 'Fresh Cup Roastery Café' from the Saanich Peninsula brought their idea to the auditions recently held in Victoria, and received the call-back this week from one of the show producers inviting them to present their patented coffee roasting technology called the 'Roastaire©'. "I went to the auditions that were being held at the Marriot Hotel after a friend notified me that they were coming to town", notes Jim Townley, President of Fresh Cup, "I arrived towards the end of the day hoping that there was still room, and they had a couple of spots left and added me to the list of 40 + presenters who had registered that day alone".

Dragon's Den producers have recently embarked on a cross country tour visiting dozens of cities across Canada looking for new gadgets and 'Greenvention' ideas to put on to the show for Season 6 which airs this fall. " I presented to the 3 onsite producers and they're as scrutinizing as the Dragon's when it comes to asking questions about the ideas that come into the audition room", states Townley, " I presented our technology in a way that covered the benefits for the Specialty Coffee industry, and future environmental issues it solves for coffee roasting".

About Fresh Cup Roastery Café:
Fresh Cup started 10 years ago roasting certified organic coffee onsite at their first store on the Saanich Peninsula with their patented roasting technology, then opened a second store in Sidney, B.C. in 2008. The Roastaire© has been labeled 'Canada's Most Environmentally Friendly Coffee Roasting Technology'. Unlike traditional coffee roasters that pass heat through the coffee once to roast it and then up a chimney, Fresh Cup's revolutionary technology recycles the heated air, scrubs it virtually clean and reintroduces it to the beans throughout the roasting cycle. "We are closed to the environment over 85% of the time, which dramatically reduces the overall emissions', notes Jim Townley, President of Fresh Cup, "This makes the Roastaire© urban friendly and as local environmental standards increase in communities across the country as a means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions nationwide. We enable any cafe to roast coffee onsite in a responsible manner with a very small carbon footprint, while at the same time giving them a strong differentiator in the freshness & taste of the coffee they offer to their customers'. Other significant differences about the coffee roasting technology that Fresh Cup brings to the Specialty Coffee Industry is the shortened training time and fraction of the energy consumption of the current drum roasting method. "Traditional drum roasting can take up to one year to learn and with the SMRT© Roast Control system of the Roastaire©, we can have someone fully proficient with the coffee roasting process within a week to 10 days", notes Townley, "Another key aspect of the design is the use of electricity to heat the air, not natural gas as in most roasters of today. What most people don't know is the energy consumption of a gas roaster is much more than what it takes to roasts the coffee itself because the natural gas afterburners on the backend consume 3 times the amount energy to manage the emissions, that's of course, if the company roasting the coffee is using an afterburner at all".

Filming for Season 6 of the Dragon's Den starts the last week in April in Toronto and Fresh Cup is booked to film their session on May 1st. "I am excited to bring our technology to the National stage in hopes that one of the Dragon's, or a viewer for that matter, sees the potential of what we have", notes Jim, "There is a $100,000 prize being offered for the Greenvention of the season, and I would love to land even that deal to further develop our business".

June 12th, 2008 - Sidney B.C.

Fresh Cup Sidney opened today and surprised their faithful customers with the addition of Italian style Gelato. An Affogatto is the combination of Gelato and a shot of espresso drizzled on top. 'People can add chocolate, caramel, or whatever else they fancy', says Bernie Grimes, Food Manager for Fresh Cup, 'We find most people stick to the traditional combination of Vanilla Gelato and espresso because it's perfect as is'. 'People don't have to choose one or the other', states Jim, 'This gives an entire family an option to come in and enjoy the best of both worlds on a hot summer day'.

D12 Side Orders - Here's a coffee that's worth losing sleep over !

March 14, 2002 - Times Colonist - Victoria, B.C.

Coffee. They're on songs about it. People suffer withdrawal from it. There's even a comic book character called Too Much Coffee Man. Coffee is a force to reckoned with. One particularly noteworthy coffee house is the Fresh Cup Roastery Cafe` on the corner of Wallace Road and Mt. Newton Cross Road. Mother Barb Townley manages the shop while Father Mel Townley is responsible for the sourcing and roasting of the beans. The all-Arabica coffee selection is totally organic and, from what we sampled, tastes great. The do-it-yourself ethic that benefits the coffee is carried over into the food at the cafe`. The soups, breads, quiches, croissants and other baked goods are all made in-house. The room is nice and relaxed in a modern way and should make any peninsular "caffeined" feel right at home. This is a cup of coffee that's worth losing sleep over.
